Why Black Friday?

Black Friday. An American standard. The day people lose their ever-loving minds over discount electronics and toys from Santa. Every other day of the year these people are hard-working and sane (most of us anyway). On that Friday after Thanksgiving, people turn back into their baser selves. Their lizard brains take over and they can only think of one thing-SALE! At all costs, they must take advantage of the SALE!

People leave their warm homes at midnight on Thanksgiving, after filling their bellies, likely twice, get into their cold cars and head out for early (late?) shopping on Black Friday. Historically, Black Friday has been the opening day of the Christmas shopping season. I think of it as an extension of the football games played on Thanksgiving day. They have a goal, which is to grab their half-priced television and race to the front of the store to pay. In the end zone they hand over their credit cards, parting with hard-earned money–or at least hard-earned credit.

Perhaps they are out at midnight simply to observe the show. Maybe they go, without a plan or a specific need, just to people watch. I’ll admit, this has a certain appeal. It must be nuts.

I, for one, will be at home on Black Friday–or perhaps at my mom’s. I will stay in my pj’s all day and browse the internet for deals. If I cannot find any, I will wait until the following Monday, Cyber Monday if you will, and purchase all of my Christmas gifts from my couch, without having to get dressed or leave the house.

My way is much more civilized. I intend to avoid the crowds at all costs on Black Friday–and every shopping day until Christmas. Online shopping is the only way to do it. Join me, why don’t you?
